P elicans at our Cordelia, CA center will soon have a new 100-foot aviary to recuperate in and get some flying exercise.

This special aviary is now under construction thanks to a grant from the Green Foundation and matching funds from California's Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN). It will be invaluable to help rehabilitate the many California brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis californicus) and American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) we receive every year.

This aviary design is based on the original design used for the pelican flight aviary at IBRRC's San Pedro Bird Center. This new caging will allow pelicans to fly and swim, keeping their wing muscles in good working order and speeding their recovery.

A new aviary for ducks has been completed. These aviaries allow recuperating birds to be outside in the natural elements and light.

IBRRC is contracted to help run the wildlife center during an oil spill. Throughout the rest of the year, it provides care to thousands of aquatic birds as part of its native animal rehabilitation program. This is done with support from public memberships, donations and grants.

The San Francisco Bay Oiled Wildlife Care & Education Center is located just south of Fairfield near Interstate 80 and 680 (directions). This facility is one of a series constructed throughout the California by OWCN to provide best achievable care to oiled wildlife.
