T he number of oiled
birds found due to the spill from the SS Luckenbach is now
at 1,666 and birds continue to come in almost daily to the
San Francisco Bay Oiled Wildlife Care and Education Center
in Cordelia.
In addition to caring for the oiled birds, the
staff at International Bird Rescue Research Center is preparing
for the arrival of orphaned spring babies, in need of a safe
haven until they are ready for release. Last year the center
took in and successfully raised and released over five hundred
orphan baby ducks and numerous other water birds including
herons, egrets and grebes. In order to feed, care and clean
up after that many babies, the center relies on volunteers.
In addition to positions in the hospital, volunteers
are also needed who can help repair and build, transport birds
from other centers (Wings on Wheels), do computer input, help
with communication, garden, do general office work and errands.
The next orientation is March 2, 2002 at 10AM
and lasts about an hour. No experience is necessary, but you
must be at least 18 years of age. Anyone interested in learning

ext 202. The center is located at 4369 Cordelia Road, about
a quarter mile east of the Cordelia Fire Station. More information
