Fairfield, CA
E
ndangered Species Day, introduced
by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-CA,
was approved by the US Senate and
is officially now celebrated as
May 11th. There are hundreds
of species on the endangered species
list, but one remains beloved by
Californians; our own California
Brown Pelican.
International Bird Rescue Research
Center (IBRRC) has a unique way
for pelican lovers to celebrate
this special day – by adopting
a pelican in their care. Their
two centers (Fairfield and San
Pedro) treat thousands of birds
who are victims of fishing line/hook
injuries, intentional cruelty,
domoic acid poisoning, botulism
and starvation and other problems
related to human impact. At
their center in San Pedro, almost
100 pelicans have been admitted
this year. Many of these
birds are young pelicans, who might
not make it without a little help,
and IBRRC needs help from the public
to carry on their work. You
can help by adopting a pelican
in care. Of course you don’t
get to keep the bird, but you can
even actually open the cage door
to release your adopted bird through
their Pelican Partners program.
Every bird that IBRRC releases
gets a numbered federal band and
when you adopt birds through their
program, you receive a beautiful
certificate with your bird’s
band number, date and place of
release, and, it is one bird per
adopter. So when you see
a pelican flying overhead, it just
might be your bird!
Please call IBRRC today to adopt
your pelican. Quantities are limited. Call
707-207-0380 extension 109 or log
on to their website at www.ibrrc.org. All
donations to IBRRC are tax deductible. Ducklings,
heron and egret orphans are also
awaiting adoption and make great
Mother’s Day gifts.
