Dawn dishwashing
liquid continues its 25-year heritage of helping to rescue
wildlife from the harmful effects of oil spills. For the
second consecutive year from September 1 to December 1, 2003,
Dawn is supporting wildlife rescue efforts by raising donations
for a leading animal rescue group when consumers purchase
Dawn.
To date, Dawn has donated thousands of gallons
of product to use during rescue efforts and, most recently,
donated
product to aid in the cleanup and rehabilitation efforts
for the 2002 oil spill off the coast of Spain. Although major
oil spills have decreased in the U.S., smaller, "everyday" accidents
still occur frequently and have a major effect on wildlife.
Animals encounter harmful oily substances daily, such as
runoff from lawn mowers, boats, and oil-soaked streets. In
light of this constant need, Dawn is expanding its Save-A-Duck
campaign this year to include:
Fund-raising: From September 1 to December 1, 2003, consumer
purchases of Dawn will result in a 10-cent donation per bottle,
up to $50,000, to wildlife rescue group International Bird
Rescue Research Center (IBRRC).
Education: The Save-A-Duck campaign will be
visiting neighborhood zoos nationwide with one of Dawn's
biggest fans, Martin Kratt,
co creator and co-host of Emmy Award-winning children's shows
Zoboomafoo ,Kratts' Creatures , and Kratt Brothers' Be the
Creature . In addition to the zoo tour, donations raised
through the purchases of Dawn will be earmarked to launch
an on-site education center at IBRRC where teachers, students,
volunteers, and interns will learn about wildlife behavior
and habitats, how birds and aquatic animals are rehabilitated,
and how to take responsibility for protecting the environment.
Twenty-five years ago, IBRRC found that Dawn dishwashing
liquid could effectively remove most oil at low concentrations
and was nonirritating to birds' delicate skin and eyes. Since
then, animal rescue groups have chosen Dawn to clean aquatic
birds and animals affected by oil spills because it's effective
at cleaning and removing oil while being gentle to the birds'
and animals' delicate skin.
"We were very excited by the positive response to last year's
Save-A-Duck campaign and are proud of Dawn's 25-year history
of supporting the rescue of wildlife affected by oil spills," said
Kristen Nostrand, Dish Category Marketing Director at Procter & Gamble. "We
are pleased to be expanding our campaign this year and call
on consumers to join Dawn in our efforts to save aquatic
birds and teach young people nationwide to respect all wildlife."
"Dawn is helping us turn our goal of building an education
center into a reality," said Jay Holcomb, executive
director at IBRRC. "We are thankful for their support
and look forward to our continued partnership in rescuing
wildlife and educating children, teachers, and wildlife rescuers."
